Advances in technology that allow massive amounts of data to be analysed have fundamentally changed the nature of personal data, Privacy risks are no longer generated by the fact that some companies have data that you have given to them. Effective informed consent in complex, difficult-to-predict situations is not an illusion, it is standard practice. For decades every developed country has a well-functioning informed consent process for participants in scientific research despite the fact that outcomes of the research are often very uncertain.
