Telefónica has indicators for managing and monitoring its projects. The evolution shown by these data also help us to analyze the progress and future initiatives about corporative sustainability.


As the Independent Review Report of the 2016 Corporate Sustainability Report (ES) indicates, this information is checked picking some samples. Specifically, the last exercise indicators review was carried out based on Telefónica’s operations in Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico and Peru.



Telefónica is one of the most important forces of progress for the countries in which operates. The firm PwC has analyzed this impact in 2016:

The impact in 2016 on employment in these countries rised to more than a million people, both directly, indirectly and induced. In this way, the activity we develop makes that for each person we hire in our workforce we additionally generate 7 jobs in the countries in which we operate.

Our contribution is produced jobs: directly; induced (through consumption made by our employees) and indirect, which is what sums (71,76%) and comes from our large volume of purchases: more than 26,063 million euros per year for more than 12,847 suppliers.

Impact on GDP: We contribute to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of all markets where we operate more than 53,244 million euros: 3.5 euros for every euro generated. This includes part of our overall tax contribution 11,364 million euros in 2016.

Contribution of our Network: Broadband, fixed and mobile broadband, that we have deployedwith the significant investment that it represents, according to PwC, 2.2% of GDP.



At Telefónica, we analyse our energy consumption each year and we calculate the carbon footprint globally in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the ISO 14064 Standard and the ITU-T L.1420 Recommendation: Methodology for energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions impact assessment of ICT in organisations, of ITU. Besides, we carry out an independent process to check data in order to obtain quality information.




In the company, we calculate our contribution to social action with standard LBG methodology. This model allows to measure, manage, evaluate and communicate the contributions, achievements and impacts of business investment in the community, so comparable with other entities.
