    Telefónica will be CO2 neutral by 2050

    Ángel Vilá, COO of Telefónica, has announced today at COP25 the company’s new targets to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, commitments that will help limiting the increase in global temperature to 1.5º C and allow the company to be carbon neutral by 2050. “At Telefónica we’re aware of the urgency to reduce carbon emissions, which is why we’re redoubling our commitments today”, explained Vilá, in whose opinion “companies that do not assume their responsibility in this new world will cease to be relevant”.

    Telefónica, recognized as an European open innovation champion for its support to startups

    For the fourth year running, startups across Europe have nominated the most active corporates in terms of open innovation as part of the Corporate Startup Stars Awards. Enel has secured the top position, followed by SAP and Telefónica, according to the new ranking unveiled during the SEP Scaleup Summit organized by Mind the Bridge at the Bolsa de Madrid. Europe’s Corporate Startup Stars annual ranking is produced by the innovation advisory firm Mind the Bridge and innovation foundation Nesta under the European Commission’s Startup Europe Partnership initiative. 36 European companies have been awarded in total: 12 as Europe’s Corporate Startup Stars and 24 as Europe’s Open Innovation Challengers.

    Loon and Internet para todos sign contract to bring balloon-powered Internet to Telefónica customers in Perú

    Loon and Internet para Todos Perú (IpT) have reached an agreement to use high-altitude balloons to expand mobile internet access to parts of the Peruvian Amazonia. The companies aim to provide service to Telefónica customers in Peru in 2020. Loon is a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. IpT Perú is an open access wholesale rural mobile infrastructure operator owned by Telefónica, Facebook, IDB Invest and CAF which aims to help bridge the digital divide bringing mobile internet to remote populations where conventional telecom infrastructure deployment is not yet economically feasible.
