During the next decade connectivity will become usual in cars. Machina Research forecasts that 90% of new cars will include connectivity platforms by 2020 – in contrast with the current percentage, which is less than 10%. For 2022 there will be 1,800 million of M2M connections dedicated to the car industry. This figure includes 700 million of connected cars and 1,100 of post-sale devices for different services, such as navigation, insurances based in usage features, stolen vehicle recovery and info-entertainment.

Among the most innovative services – and leading technological innovation in services and products – that Telefónica showed at its stand in the Mobile World Congress 2014, we must highlight the connected car. By showing a Tesla Model- S, Telefónica and Tesla demonstrated to MWC 2014 visitors the benefits of connected car technology for drivers and passengers.

If you did not have the chance to visit our stand, keep reading because we point below the assets of a Tesla Model- S connected by Telefónica:

  • Through a SIM card located behind the car’s 17 inches screen, Telefónica provides Internet connection to the car. Through the screen, the driver has the control of doors, windows, bonnet, etc. and can connect to the Internet, Google Maps and radio – through the Internet -. In addition, through this screen the driver can get a diagnostics control of the car.
  • Another asset is that Tesla can solve remotely problems that could arise in the car, such as electric breakdowns or if the alarm goes off.
  • Telefónica offers Tesla owners a device that, when connected to the car, allows the driver to get all the car information in his/her smartphone. For example, through this device, the driver can geo-reference his/her car, check the gas and battery levels and get diagnostics control of the car.

These are just some benefits offered by Telefónica and the Tesla Model- S. However, industry analysts forecast more benefits in the coming years, such as the following:

  1. Congestion warning: drivers can see in which highways or roads they will hit a traffic jam.
  2. Access to music and games in real time.
  3. Choice of use.
  4. Design and image.
  5. Access to the driver’s computers at home.
  6. Services that have to do with the driver’s current location: the driver can ask the car where to go for dinner and the map will show the route.

We will keep posting on other innovative services shown by Telefónica at the MWC 2014, so stay tuned!
