  • The combination of AI and Big Data serves to enhance and maximise the possibilities that both technologies offer separately.
  • The relationship between Big Data and AI can be summarised as follows: the former provides the necessary data and the latter processes and interprets it.
  • In other words, both technologies complement each other to convert massive data collection into information on which to base decisions.

Big Data and Artificial Intelligence are two technological concepts with increasing applications in more and more different fields. But what is the relationship between them?

Before looking at how these two technologies interact, let’s briefly summarise what each one consists of.

Big Data: what is it?

If we ask ourselves what Big Data is, we can answer that it is the technology responsible for managing huge volumes of data so that, after analysis, conclusions can be drawn to aid decision-making.

The so-called “V” of Big Data defines the characteristics of this technology: volume, velocity, variety, value, visualisation and variability, although some theorists include other characteristics that also begin with the same letter.

What is AI

When asked what Artificial Intelligence is, we can answer that it is the ability of machines to imitate how humans learn or even reason.

This is a very broad and increasingly popular term that also presents numerous challenges given the speed at which it is developing.

Relationship between Big Data and Artificial Intelligence

These two technologies interact in a complementary manner, as their capabilities enhance each other and form the basis of the digital transformation that the world is currently undergoing.

More specifically, Big Data ‘feeds’ AI with a huge variety of large-scale data, enabling Artificial Intelligence to identify patterns, predict trends, detect errors or anomalies and automate processes that would be impossible to tackle using traditional human methods alone.

Thanks to advanced techniques such as machine learning and natural language processing, AI extracts value from the information collected by Big Data. In this way, all the massive data that has been collected is converted into both processed information and useful knowledge for better decision-making.

It should be added that the more data AI processes, thanks to Big Data, the more robust and accurate the models will be. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence can make the processing and analysis carried out by Big Data more useful and efficient thanks to automation.

Advantages of the combination of Big Data and AI

The synergy between these two technologies, thanks to the complementarity mentioned above, offers a number of benefits.

On the one hand, there is process optimisation with the possibility of making more accurate, faster and more reliable decisions.

On the other hand, the ability to personalise offers improvements in both the customer experience and the development of new products or services.

Likewise, the capabilities of these technologies to quickly analyse large volumes of information can be used to anticipate potential cyber threats or fraud.

From the perspective of increasing operational efficiency, the automation of repetitive tasks, in addition to being an improvement in itself, also serves to minimise errors.

Therefore, based on what has been discussed throughout this article, we could summarise the relationship between these two technologies by saying that Big Data provides the data and Artificial Intelligence processes and interprets it in order to extract knowledge, automate decisions and subsequently offer competitive advantages thanks to this accumulated and interpreted knowledge.
