Tell us a little about yourself. What does your job at Telefónica involve?
My role is to lead the strategy and development of initiatives related to immersive experiences and web3. My main responsibility is to explore and define how these emerging technologies can transform the digital experience of users and offer new business opportunities for the company.
I can confidently say that we are one of the most advanced telecommunications companies in the world in web3, launching projects such as Helium in Mexico, the crypto wallet, validator nodes, showcasing the capabilities of Open Gateway to web3 developers, and making our authorization control platform compatible with smart contracts.
What is web3?
Web3 provides the tools to create digital economies, manage identities and transactions, and secure asset ownership.
How do you see it evolving?
Web3 is shaping a future for the internet that promotes decentralization, individual ownership, and immersive interaction. Web3 is redefining how users manage their digital data and assets, thanks to blockchain technology.
This transition to a more open and user-controlled web opens the door to new forms of online interaction, creating a more inclusive and transparent digital economy. At the same time, the metaverse is advancing toward more realistic and accessible virtual experiences, allowing people to interact, work, and play in fully immersive environments.
As both technologies continue to evolve, their convergence promises to create a more integrated and dynamic digital space. With advances in cross-platform interoperability and the integration of artificial intelligence, the future of these technologies is promising.
Although there are still technical and social challenges to overcome, the direction in which they are moving promises a profound transformation in how we live, work, and interact in the digital world.
Changing the subject, as the first Spanish female hacker to speak at events such as DEF CON and Black Hat Briefings, could you explain what a hacker is? It often has a negative connotation…
The word “hacker” has traditionally been associated with a negative figure or cybercriminal, but this view is limited and erroneous. Originally, the term refers to someone with a deep technical curiosity and exceptional skills in the use and understanding of computer systems. Hackers are people who enjoy exploring, modifying, and improving technologies, often in creative and innovative ways.
Could you tell us why you think it is important to commemorate a day such as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is celebrated on February 11?
International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a key date for remembering the importance of gender equality in science, for recognizing pioneers, and for continuing to work toward creating an environment that promotes the full and equal participation of women in these fields. Doing so benefits not only women, but society as a whole, which is enriched by a more diverse, inclusive, and innovative science.
What do you think is the importance of having female role models in STEM?
Having female role models in STEM is essential to inspire and empower future generations of women and girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Seeing women excel in these fields makes young women feel more motivated and confident to pursue scientific careers, challenging gender stereotypes.
In addition, the visibility of successful women helps to break gender biases and foster a more inclusive environment where skills and talents are valued regardless of gender.
Women leaders in STEM also play a key role in mentoring and creating support networks that help other women overcome barriers and advance in their careers. The presence of female role models in these fields not only improves gender equity, but also drives greater diversity, which is essential for innovation and more effective decision-making.
In short, having female role models in STEM is crucial to moving toward a more inclusive, creative, and equitable future in science and technology.
Who at Telefónica would you nominate for this interview who you consider to be excellent at their job?
Félix Brezo, from Telefónica Tech. If it weren’t for his support and patience, I probably would never have fallen in love with technology and, in particular, security.
