The Finnacial Times-ETNO Summit (2018) gathered leading policymakers, regulators, industry executives and investors from Europe and beyond to discuss about Europe’s role in connected world. This year’s edition of the event was held in Brussels, where José María Álvarez-Pallete, Chairman and CEO of Telefónica, reflected on the state of telecom infrastructure investment and reviewed the challenges that European operators are facing to accelerate the digitalisation of the region.
During his speech, José María Álvarez-Pallete answered a decalogue of questions related to connectivity, innovation or the contribution of the telecom sector to European GDP and its market capitalization, among other subjects. One of the key points he addressed was Europe’s loss of ground in terms of fibre deployment and investment. According to him, the solution is clear: deregulate, deregulate and deregulate.
