In the recent General Assembly of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), Mr Luis Jorge Romero has been elected new Director General, for a 5 year term starting July 2011

ETSI is recognised as an official European Standards Organisation by the European Union and produces globally applicable standards for Information & Communications Technologies including fixed, mobile, radio, broadcast, internet, aeronautical and other areas. It is the most important organisation for setting common European standards for ICT services which help improving interoperability and lower costs for communication and Internet services.

Mr Romero has worked in operational mobile businesses in Spain, Romania, Morocco and Mexico, before he left Telefonica’s Group for a more recent entrepreneurial career. During his last stage in Telefónica he was responsible for standardizations issues, so he holds extensive expertise and long experience in this field. This will serve him well as a basis to guide the ETSI staff through the objectives and challenges ETSI is facing in the near future and to foster the co-operation and good relations with all stakeholders and other standardization bodies at European and international level, to ensure that Europe continues to play a leading role in the ICT Global Village. In words of Mr Romero: “I am excited to have the opportunity to lead the ETSI team and being at the forefront of ICT technology, whilst spearheading new developments to come, particularly at a time when there are many important topics in the world of standards in which ETSI plays a key role”.

We congratulate Luis Jorge and wish him all the best for his term as Director General of ETSI!
