Making Cloud Computing safe: Telefónica’s new European cloud data centre

In April 2013, Telefónica opened its largest data centre to house its range of digital services, including cloud computing and customer outsourcing. The centre comprises a total of 23 Information Technology (IT) rooms and a built area of 65,700m2, on a plot of land the size of 8 football pitches. ‘Alcalá Data Centre’ operates as Telefónica’s cloud services base for Europe.

At its new Data Centre, Telefónica will provide the latest in outsourcing services for infrastructures, housing, backup, storage, monitoring, complete outsourcing of systems and IT contingency services. Special emphasis will also be placed on new Cloud services, offering customers a Virtual Data Centre service. This is a flexible and made-to-measure facility, offering organisations a private space in a secure environment, in which they can install all the business applications they need, such as e-mail, intranet, corporate website, CRM, management tools, and e-Commerce platforms.

Telefónica will invest a total of €300 million in the new Data Centre, which will guarantee 99.995% annual reliability. It is the largest centre in the World with Tier IV Gold certification (obtained in May 2014) from the Uptime Institute, which guarantees the highest level of fault tolerance. In addition, the Alcalá Data Centre has been awarded with these other awards:

• “Leeds Gold” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), awarded by the US Green Building Council, in the category of Newly Constructed Buildings.

• “Brill Awards for Efficient IT”, awarded by the Uptime Institute, in the category of Global Lidership Awards.

• “Highest Excelency Project for Data Centre”, awarded by the Data Center Market, in acknowledgement to the best projects associated to the data centre business in Spain in 2014.
