Telefónica has launched a plan to monitor and strengthen its mobile network ahead of the solar eclipse taking place next Wednesday, 12 August, which will be visible at various locations across Spain.
The operator, which began planning this initiative for the eclipse five months ago, has analysed network coverage at the more than 400 observation points notified by the autonomous communities.
To meet the extraordinary demand for connectivity from national and international observers expected at these locations, Telefónica has planned to carry out specific configuration and optimisation work in 31 provinces and at 2,756 sites spread across the thousands of kilometres that the upcoming solar eclipse will cover in Spain. The eclipse will be particularly visible in Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castile -La Mancha, Castile and León, Catalonia, the Community of Madrid, the Valencian Community, Galicia, La Rioja, Navarre and the Basque Country.
These measures to configure the mobile network for the eclipse involve Telefónica intelligently reconfiguring the technical parameters of its base stations, adapting them to traffic demand. In this way, the network redistributes equipment capacity and bandwidth to ensure that users can access the service reliably and without interruptions.

Summer Plan
This capacity boost for the solar eclipse forms part of Telefónica’s summer plan, which this year involves more than 500 measures to upgrade existing infrastructure and new deployments in 34 key locations along the Spanish coast, as well as covering and optimising 440 events through optimisation measures and, in addition, deploying several mobile units to different parts of Spain for the most heavily attended events.
