Technology, a catalyst for productivity and precision in logistics processes

I currently work as Operations Leader in the Warehouses area, attached to the Logistics Department, where I actively contribute to optimising the network and improving our customers’ communication experience. In addition to my regular duties, I also contribute as an Internal Auditor for the Environmental Management System, participating in the audit processes required to obtain and maintain ISO 14001:2015 certification.

Our operations cover all activities related to the reception, storage, handling, control and dispatch of goods within the warehouse. These functions are essential to ensure the timely availability of materials for both the Networks and Commercial areas, thus contributing to the efficiency of the entire supply chain.

It should be noted that our work is cross-cutting within the organisation, as it directly impacts multiple processes and key areas of the company. We can highlight our commitment and contribution to achieving ‘A transformation in our mobile access network’ with the modernisation of 1,000 nodes.

What are your main activities?

The main activities are concentrated in four essential phases:

  • Receipt and Verification: unloading, checking the goods received against the purchase order and recording them in the system.
  • Storage and Location: efficient distribution of stock in the available space, ensuring easy access and preservation.
  • Order Preparation (Picking): removal of the required products from stock according to sales orders.
  • Dispatch and Loading (Shipping): final packaging, labelling, generation of documentation and loading of orders onto transport vehicles.
  • Another key function performed by warehouses is the optimisation of available space, which allows for more efficient resource management. In this regard, obsolete and/or damaged material is also removed from both warehouses and various collection centres nationwide. This work includes the proper handling of electronic material from the Commercial and Networks areas, thus contributing to operational sustainability and care for the environment. It is important to note that all decommissioned material is delivered to a recycling company duly authorised by the national environmental regulatory body.

What are its objectives?

The fundamental objectives we have in this area are:

  • Cost optimisation: reducing operating and handling costs.
  • Efficiency maximisation: improving the performance and speed of internal processes.
  • Inventory Accuracy: maintaining accurate control of available stock (inventory).
  • Service Level: meeting customer demand as quickly as possible and with zero errors in orders.

How does technology help with warehouse tasks?

Technology acts as a catalyst for productivity and accuracy in logistics processes. Through systems such as WMS (Warehouse Management System), decision-making is automated, inventory location is optimised, human errors in the picking process are minimised, and total, real-time visibility of the entire operational chain is guaranteed.

What impact does the advancement of new technologies have?

The impact is profoundly transformative. New technologies enable the evolution of traditional warehouses into smart distribution centres. This translates into the automation of repetitive tasks using robotics and AGVs, the use of predictive analytics to anticipate demand, and more efficient integration with suppliers and carriers, strengthening the agility and resilience of the supply chain.

How does the IoT influence a telecommunications warehouse?

The IoT enables more efficient and connected warehouse management through the use of sensors, RFID tags, and smart devices that provide real-time visibility into inventory. This technology facilitates the tracking of equipment and materials, automates processes such as picking and stock replenishment, and improves traceability.

It also helps to optimise physical space and enhances operational security. In the telecommunications sector, the IoT strengthens the supply chain by integrating with management systems and supporting data-driven strategic decisions.
