How to write a blog

Many of my colleagues ask me, because of my job as a content manager, for tips or advice on writing for the corporate blog. For this reason, today I would like to explain what these keys are for me, and remind you of the importance of “feeling comfortable with the final result, and making the content your own”.

Tips for better communication

The first thing to do is to define your target audience. Not only should we know where that person is from, their gender and age, but we should also try to understand their interests and objectives in order to communicate with them more effectively. The better we define them, the easier it will be to connect with that person.

We must seek empathy with the reader, and to do so, it is advisable to write as if we were having a conversation with them. We can use direct phrases or ask them questions. In short, they must feel ‘close to you’.

Those of us who work in communication often say that our job is to tell stories. That is why it is so important to bring warmth to the texts we write. Data is ultimately forgotten, but everyday examples or experiences tend to leave a mark on us and are not so easily forgotten.

Our information should always be useful to the reader, resolving any questions or doubts you think they may have about the topic. The person who spends time reading your post should always take something away from it: a message, a lesson or simply a moral. But they cannot leave empty-handed. Always ask yourself: what am I contributing with my article?

Sometimes, people are afraid to face a blank page, so I try to help them structure their article through a series of questions, like a kind of interview that we then transform together into a solid article, with its headline and corresponding paragraphs (I usually use these questions to create subheadings, to separate topics). There is no need to be afraid of making mistakes; we are all human, and that is precisely what connects us with our readers.

We must be interactive; we can ask them questions or tell them about our experiences. For this reason, I recommend using ‘calls to action’. Ultimately, these are just words or phrases that seek to elicit a direct response from the reader. They can be questions or exclamations to get their opinion on the topic we are discussing. Example: ‘If you are interested in this content, don’t forget to subscribe to the blog’.

On the other hand, we must never forget the format of the text. We can make it attractive by using short, direct sentences and subtitles, bold type, underlining, spaces between texts and even lists that make it easier and quicker to read.

The key is for there to be harmony between the writer and the reader. Both must ‘speak the same language’. Sometimes when I read articles, I wonder why the writer feels the need to answer the question posed in the headline at the end of the article. And although the answer is clear—so that you reach the end of the text—this makes me particularly nervous. I don’t like being fed nonsense or wasting my time. When you write, ask yourself: is this information necessary? Is it of interest to the reader?

And finally, I would like to recommend that you use AI only as a source of information, and always cross-check it, as search engines nowadays heavily penalise content that is not ‘human’ and, moreover, take away that “pride” of being a writer. Cheer up, everyone, I am looking forward to reading all your ‘creators’ articles.
