Engineering self-awareness

A different day

Today is a good day. I board a plane full of strangers to meet a friend whom I miss very much. I love that feeling when the plane accelerates and tilts to take off. That thrust relaxes me. I could even fall asleep if the whole flight were like that.

From the air, everything changes. Below, I see houses, cars, streets full of people… and noise. Lots of noise that sometimes distracts you from your goal. But from above, everything looks different: lots of land, water, space. In Pamplona, I miss the sea. Your perspective changes depending on where you look from.

Seeing with different eyes

That’s how it is with everything. What is overwhelming up close becomes blurred from a distance. The shocking news, the doubts, the fears that shake our centre of gravity… Could it be that by changing the way I look at things, I am regaining my space? Or do I need to get on a plane to feel better?

Inner reflection and personal growth

Professionally, I also notice that I have more room to observe myself: how I behave in the face of difficulties, how I relate to others, how I react to the positive. And it makes me laugh to think about it, because it’s been a long time since I’ve seen so many good things.

A few months ago, I wrote that changes were coming. And they have been good. That even scares me now. But I smile: I know that my most fearful self never wins battles. Making difficult decisions is my thing. Walking on unstable ground is too.

No frills: authenticity

I don’t want frills in speeches. Not from presidents, journalists or gurus. I want authentic people. It’s fine if someone prefers an easy life, but at least let it be real.

I’m on the team that wants to feel every obstacle. If I have to make an offer for a product I don’t know, I go into the engineering SharePoint, do research on Salesforce, and ask the experts on the team. I’m excited to think about how tools like IngenIA will help us in the future: entering data and getting detailed descriptions tailored to each customer.

I’m also happy to know that I’m an ambassador for this innovation. Thank you in advance to Jesús Gómez Machí for his patience and support in this process.

Talk, expose yourself and grow

When it’s my turn to share ideas with the team or give an opinion that, although it may seem small, can make a difference, I draw on courage I didn’t even know I had. I try not to let my nervousness show.

And if the path runs out of stones, I know I’ll get bored and look for another one. This journey reminds me of who I really am. Now I can get off the plane and keep walking.

To conclude: some questions

  • How do you get to know yourself?
  • What tests do you set yourself to gain perspective?
  • What helps you breathe, take a deep breath and jump to the next step in your career?
  • Do you find it difficult to find authentic people?

Meanwhile, I’m going to look for another stone. I’ll decide whether to jump over it or go around it.
