Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key technology for Europe’s future. Its impact transcends sectors and borders by boosting productivity, improving public services, enhancing sustainability and accelerating innovation.

Europe is committed to human-centred, secure and ethical AI, aligned with the values of the rule of law. The new AI Act and digital industrial policy lay the foundations to make Europe a true “AI Continent”, where innovation and trust advance hand in hand.

Telecommunications underpin AI´s development and adoption. Through the “Telco for AI” approach, operators provide the connectivity, data and computing power needed to train, deploy and scale AI solutions securely and sustainably.

At the same time, with “AI for Telco”, AI itself transforms networks, making them smarter, more automated and more efficient.

This dual vision places telcos at the heart of the new European digital ecosystem, driving trustworthy, responsible and human-centred AI.

A European vision for the future

Artificial Intelligence is a pillar of the new European industrial policy, aimed at strengthening the continent’s technological capabilities and ensuring a fair and sustainable digital transition.

For Europe to lead this transformation, it is essential to invest, innovate and apply AI with purpose, accelerating its adoption across all economic sectors.

AI governance principles and model at Telefónica

Telefónica approved ethical principles for AI that apply throughout the company. These principles apply from the design and development stage, including the use of products and services by company employees, suppliers and third parties.

Our AI governance model, approved in 2023, sets out clear processes and responsibilities to harness AI´s full potential, protect people, and minimise risks at every stage of the AI systems life cycle: from design and development to acquisition, marketing and use.

Our AI principles and governance model apply to all our products and services from the design stage and extend to our suppliers and business partners. It will also enable us to comply with the applicable AI laws in each of the countries in which we operate.
