Germany

Telefónica has a long history in Germany. The company, which has been in the country for almost 15 years, operates under the commercial brand O2.

Its subsidiary, Telefónica Deutschland -which completed the acquisition of the E-Plus Group in October 2014- trades on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since October 2012 and in the TecDAX since 2013. The new Telefonica Deutschland, resulting from the merger of O2 and the E-Plus Group, has become the leading mobile operator in the country with over 43 million mobile accesses.

Telefonica Deutschland offers its German private and business customers post-paid and prepaid mobile telecom products as well as innovative mobile data services based on the GPRS, UMTS and LTE technologies. In addition, the integrated communications provider also offers DSL fixed network telephony and high-speed Internet. The company operates a successful multi-brand strategy: in addition to the familiar brands O2 Open in a new window and BASE Open in a new window, Telefónica Deutschland also maintains numerous secondary and partner brands. For example, these include AY YILDIZ Open in a new window, Blau Open in a new window, FONIC Open in a new window, netzclub Open in a new window, Ortel Mobile Open in a new window, simyo Open in a new window, AldiTalk Open in a new window or Tchibo mobil Open in a new window. In this way, the company reaches additional customer groups – and positions itself as the leading provider of smartphone tariffs and products.

In 2014, Telefónica Germany continued to densify its mobile data network and accelerate the deployment of the LTE network, reaching an outdoor coverage of 75% (+13 p.p. year-on-year).

Telefónica Deutshland maintained market momentum and generated significant synergies in 2015. Going forward the company is moving its focus from integration to transformation. Some key statistics at the end of 2015:

  • Telefónica has 48.4 million accesses in Germany
  • Telefónica’s revenue in Germany reached €7,888 million and OIBDA, €1,858 million. Non-SMS data revenue account for 72% of total data revenue.
  • Telefónica invested 2,230 million euros in CapEx, devoted mainly to improve network quality and accelerate deployment of the LTE network.
