It is a global initiative in the telecommunications sector, coordinated by the GSMA, which seeks to open up the capabilities of mobile networks through standardised and secure APIs. Its purpose is to enable developers and companies to integrate advanced network functions—such as identity verification, geolocation, and service quality control—directly into their digital applications and services.

In this way, the telecoms industry is going beyond simply transporting data and actively participating in the creation of digital value, while ensuring user privacy, security and rights at all times.

Open Gateway represents a . For years, operators have provided the essential infrastructure that underpins all digital businesses, but other players have captured much of the value.

With Open Gateway, we want to reverse this trend by leveraging the enormous potential of our assets—networks, data, operational intelligence—to offer new digital services with security and global scale. The key lies in collaboration and standardisation: only a common language among operators, driven by the GSMA, will allow APIs to work the same on any network, as was the case with 4G and 5G.

Example of practical application

We are collaborating with the financial sector to prevent digital fraud. A typical case is the duplication of a SIM card, which can be a sign of attempted fraud on a bank account. Thanks to our APIs, banks and fintechs can detect this risk in real time and protect the user before any damage occurs.

In countries such as Brazil, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany, projects are already underway with large organisations. At Mobile World Congress 2025, we showcased examples with Itaú, the largest bank in Latin America, and Cabify, which uses these capabilities to enhance security and improve the user experience. And this is just the beginning: we will soon see new integrations with fintechs, banks, e-commerce and digital platforms seeking to leverage the Open Gateway ecosystem to improve their processes.

Telefónica is one of the main drivers of Open Gateway globally. From the initial definition of the standard to its commercial deployment, we are leading key projects in Spain and Brazil, and collaborating with other operators in the GSMA working groups.

Our commitment is firm: we believe that the future of the sector lies in opening up our networks and turning them into secure, universal digital platforms for companies around the world.
