The challenge: Complexity demands automation
As modern networks grow in size and complexity, driven by rapid technological change, security requirements and growing customer demand for new services, the need for autonomous and efficient network management is critical. One of the most complex processes is the implementation and updating of network elements, which must ensure service continuity and avoid any impact on customers.
To address this, Telefónica Germany is transforming its approach to software updates to minimise risk, avoid service interruptions and deliver faster, higher-quality updates, resulting in a better user experience.
The solution: Intent-Based In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU)
As part of the Autonomous Network Journey (ANJ) programme, which aims to transform processes and increase network autonomy, Telefónica Germany has successfully implemented the ISSU (In-Service Software Upgrade) solution to radically transform the software update process in its 5G SA Core domain.
ISSU increases autonomy by implementing an intent-based process, defined by TM Forum as the ability of a system to automatically execute tasks based solely on the outcome expected by the operator. This initiative directly propels Telefónica Germany towards the milestone of achieving Level 4 autonomy according to TM Forum.
Transformative benefits: Zero Disruption, Accelerated Innovation
The implementation of automated ISSU in core network functions (AMF, SMF, UPF and Signalling) offers a clear and differentiated value proposition:
Impact on Customer Experience and Reliability
- Avoiding Service Disruption: ISSU ensures that software updates are performed without impacting service, allowing network functions to remain fully operational during updates.
- Avoiding Loss of Active Sessions: Established data sessions, including video streams, voice calls, or downloads, continue during updates, meaning customers experience no interruptions or forced shutdowns due to session termination.
‘ISSU in the Packet Core allows us to upgrade our network without impacting service during the day. We change the network while customers enjoy our services. Video streams, voice calls or downloads are not interrupted, while we guarantee maximum reliability for our customers. A true win-win.’ — Bas Hendrikx, Head of Digital Cloud Networks at Telefónica Germany.
Impact on Operations and Deployment Speed
The automated ISSU solution drives innovation and the deployment of new features by enabling operational autonomy and a smarter deployment process.
“ISSU boosts our reliability from an operational and security perspective. It allows us to perform updates during business hours, day after day, and enables DevOps teams to plan for them. The days of long-term planning and critical maintenance windows are behind us.” — Bas Hendrikx, Head of Digital Cloud Networks at Telefónica Germany
- Elimination of Maintenance Windows: Updates can now be executed outside of traditional maintenance windows, leveraging intelligent scheduling.
- Fast Update Periods: Update times are dramatically reduced from days to hours, surpassing older models that suffered delays of up to 48 hours.
- Improved Reliability: Automated software updates with real-time monitoring and roll-out capability reduce risk during upgrades and improve operational stability.
Setting a New Industry Standard
By adopting ISSU, Telefónica Germany is setting a new industry standard for network autonomy, aiming for Level 4 autonomy as defined by TM Forum. This initiative positions the company to deliver more efficient, intelligent and resilient network operations, supporting the future challenges of the sector.
