Earth Hour was born in Sydney almost two decades ago as a symbolic action: switching off the lights for one hour to remind us that the fight against climate change begins with small actions. Since then, it has become the world’s largest environmental movement, engaging millions of people, institutions, and companies across more than 190 countries.

Movistar Plus+ is once again supporting Earth Hour as media partner, helping to amplify its message through special programming focused on conservation, ecosystems, and the climate emergency. Among the featured content, viewers will be able to enjoy documentaries on Doñana, endangered rivers, Iceland, and the series Hope! We’re Still in Time, among others.

Our support

For more than ten years, Telefónica has supported this initiative through a wide range of global and local actions, such as:

  • Projecting the countdown and switching off lights in iconic buildings.
  • Organising in-store activities such as concerts and awareness talks.
  • Spreading the initiative among employees and customers via social media, shops, and corporate channels.
  • Collaborating as media partner through Movistar Plus+, offering special programming and broadcasting WWF’s Earth Hour campaign advert across the platform’s channels.
  • Occasionally taking part in sports challenges with the Movistar Team.
  • Carrying out volunteering activities through Fundación Telefónica.

Did you know that Jorge Drexler performed years ago at the Movistar store on Gran Vía to remind us that—just like his music—every small gesture resonates across the planet?

20 years of environmental achievements

WWF celebrates this edition by highlighting 20 environmental milestones driven by citizen action—from the recovery of the ozone layer and the expansion of marine protected areas, to ecosystem restoration projects and the comeback of emblematic species such as the Iberian lynx.

Telefónica’s path towards a more sustainable future

Over these years, Telefónica has also made significant progress on its environmental roadmap:

  • A 49% reduction in our emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) compared with 2015.
  • 100% renewable electricity consumption in Europe and Brazil.
  • 95% of waste reused or recycled.
  • 57% of B2B solutions verified as Eco Smart by AENOR.

And we continue moving forward: our goal is to reach net-zero emissions by 2040 and to help our customers reduce their carbon footprint through more efficient digital solutions.

A global gesture reminding us that every action counts

On Saturday 28 March, from 20:30 to 21:30, millions of people around the world will once again switch off their lights to remind ourselves that protecting the planet begins with everyday decisions.

At Telefónica, we believe in the power of collective action.
