After Web 1 and Web 2, Web 3 is set to revolutionize the Internet but still has a long way to go.
A Web 3 that is closely related to the Blockchain presenting common features such as decentralization and advantages such as security, privacy or an improved user experience.
However, this does not mean that it does not also count on a series of challenges or challenges to be faced from different perspectives such as technical, regulatory or social issues.
Let’s take a look at some of them.
Usability
Usability is one of the main stumbling blocks for the development of web3, as it may not be easy for the average user to manage wallets or keys or to become familiar with concepts such as DAO, smart contracts or tokens.
As a result, the user experience compared to Web 2 is still significant, which makes it difficult for the number of web3 users to see a quantitative leap in the volume of users.
Thus, the fact that usability is still the main priority for users of open platforms and interoperability is a challenge that web3 will have to face in the medium term.
Scalability
Another issue that web3 must resolve in order to reach higher levels of use is scalability.
Some of the world’s leading blockchains are facing difficulties in ensuring fast transactions or greater capacity to carry out more transactions in the same time frame.
While it is true that scaling solutions do exist, they are not comparable to those of centralized systems, so Web 3 faces the aforementioned difficulties when it comes to supporting high volumes of users or transactions.
Regulation
As is the case with other new technologies that are evolving rapidly, such as Artificial Intelligence, regulatory issues are another of the issues that Web 3 development must face.
This is a complex issue that is also “alive”, so the debate is still open.
The development of standards and laws for activities within web3, such as Blockchain or cryptocurrencies, is part of the regulation of this third generation of the Internet, which also includes other issues such as consumer protection, regulatory compliance or existing regulatory frameworks in different countries or regions.
Communication
Whoever has reached this point in the article will have come across a series of acronyms and/or concepts that may not ring a bell or may be complex. Well, this is also one of the challenges facing Web 3.
Trying to minimize the barriers for people outside the ecosystem of this technology involves making it more understandable for the common of potential users.
Therefore, applying methodologies or resources that help to make pedagogy by making the characteristics of Web 3 more understandable is one of the challenges of this third generation of the Internet, bringing users closer to concepts such as DAO, token or Blockchain.
Ethics
While also not an issue unique to web3, ethical challenges linked to inappropriate uses of AI are also present.
For example, deepfakes can pose a drawback that compromises authenticity in decentralized environments where the control of human moderators falls short.
Interoperability
Not having clear standards is also a difficulty when integrating different platforms or blockchains.
Interoperability is an issue of great relevance so that the movement of assets or transactions can be carried out not only easily but also comfortably and securely.
These clear standards and compatible protocols are still under development and will require consensus in order to advance in the implementation of web3.
