Europe is facing a decisive moment for its competitiveness and its position on the global stage. Having made significant progress in building its digital framework, the challenge now is to move from ambition to action by mobilizing investment, accelerating innovation, and creating the conditions that enable European companies to grow and compete globally.
Technology is a key driver of productivity, resilience, and strategic autonomy. Artificial intelligence, advanced connectivity, cloud-edge computing, cybersecurity, and quantum technologies are transforming the economy and reshaping global competition. Europe must accelerate their development and adoption and translate its scientific, industrial, and entrepreneurial capabilities into competitive, scalable solutions.
A Strong Telecommunications Sector for a Competitive Europe
Telecommunications play a strategic role in this transformation. Advanced and resilient networks are the infrastructure upon which businesses, public administrations, and citizens digitalize their activities, and on which new technologies and digital services are developed.
However, market fragmentation and a complex regulatory framework designed for a previous reality limit the sector’s ability to achieve scale, invest, and innovate. Europe must move toward a true Single Market and a simplified, harmonized, and investment-friendly regulatory framework that also ensures a level playing field among the different actors in the digital value chain. In this regard, the proposed Digital Networks Act and the European Omnibus agenda represent an opportunity to achieve these objectives.
Competitiveness, resilience, and technological sovereignty are closely interconnected. A competitive, innovative, and economically sustainable telecommunications sector is essential to advance all three dimensions and strengthen Europe’s technological leadership.
