Cloud Reports May 2015Here we are again with the main reports published in May 2015 that seemed interesting for me concerning the digital economy and the main debated issues in the last months such as the EU proposal as a Digital strategy for Europe, the relevance of the e-commerce and mobile financial services. Internet Governance and Net Neutrality issues cannot be avoided and the changes of the market due to digitalization neither, influencing the public policy debate. The World in 2015: ICT Facts & Figures 2015, ITU, May 2015.

This is a very useful annual publication on ICT data market delivered by the ITU and giving a clear overview of the evolution of the ICT market in the past 15 years.

 

It highlights the good outcomes of this sector, obtaining more than 7 billion mobile subscriptions worldwide, more than 3.2 billion people using the Internet, of which two billion live in developing countries, with a clear trend of decrease of prices while services and speed connectivity are continuously increasing. This is a reference when you wish to compare the evolution of ICT worldwide.

CISCO Visual Networking Index: Forecast and Methodology, 2014-2019, CISCO, May 2015.

This report gathers relevant data concerning the global IP traffic forecast, providing useful information on several aspects such as Internet traffic volumes, CDNs, origination of IP traffic, relevance of mobile traffic, fixed broadband speeds, video and content traffic, but also a good overview on the regional differences and traffic evolution.

2015 Internet Trends, Code Conference, KPCB, May 2015.

These are almost 200 slides presenting the KPCB’s Mary Meeker 2015 Internet Trends report and showing the evolution of Internet since the last 20 years. It explains the evolution of the Interne use, the increasing use of mobile to access Internet, the different kind of users and the main trends regionally in this race towards the digitalization of the economy.

A Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe: Analysis and Evidence, European Commission, May 2015.

This is the very expected report from the European Commission explaining the future strategy for the Digital Single Market in Europe. The EC working document includes a set of measures that should be developed untill the end of 2016. The proposal presents 16 key actions, based on 3 different pillars, such as:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

-          Better access for consumers and businesses to digital goods and services across Europe

-          Create the right conditions, level playing field and environment for digital networks and content services to flourish

-          Maximize the growth potential of the digital economy.

 

The European Commission has delivered a very visual roadmap through a friendly infographic and a clear factsheet on the proposal. Some stakeholders have already announced their opinion on the EC proposal such as our company, Telefónica, that you could read here, or ETNO, ECTA, GSMA and even the European Parliament.

Digital Agenda for Europe, Engagement for Growth and Jobs, European Commission, May 2015.

The European Commission has published a report on SME's engagement in e-commerce. Taking into account that a high percentage of all EU businesses are considered SMEs and that they provide 2 out of 3 of the private sector jobs, it reading is worthwhile.

 

The report presents key questions for entrepreneurs who are planning to develop an activity related to e-commerce. It also highlights the current challenges existing for European e-commerce and it finally delivers recommendations for European policy makers.

 

The main issues detected as barriers for their development are the high level of competition for SMEs coming from large international players, the existing barriers to cross-border trade, the lack of skilled and experts’ people on the market for this business and also the lack of available funds to finance the business projects.

Mobile financial services in Latin America & the Caribbean: state of play, commercial models and regulatory approaches, GSMA, May 2015.

A new report issued by GSMA with a specific focus in Latin America and the relevance of mobile financial services. It describes the state of play, the business models and the regulatory conditions in several countries of the region, gathering them into different types. This is a clear and visual report. Solving the international Internet Policy Coordination Problem, CIGI, May 2015.

This new CIGI report describes the evolution of Internet as a disrupting factor worldwide and how it blurs physical frontiers, all becoming global. That is why this paper defends the thesis that Internet public policies should not be adressed in separeted silos but it should be approached in a global way, using the current existing international organisations, but increasing the level of cooperation, with the objective of delivering better policy outcomes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 8A heterostakeholder cooperation for sustainable Internet policymaking, Internet Policy Review, May 2015.

This is an article presenting the increase of the multistakeholder approach in the Internet governance and policymaking. It approach criticizes the multiplicity of agents present in this area instead of centering into the interests of every stakeholder, in order to find a common ground. It proposes a “heterostakeholder” approach trying to assess the different interests, in order to reach suitable proposals and policies in this area.

Net Neutrality: Reflections on the Current Debate, Pablo Bello, Juan Jung, CIGI, May 2015.

This is a new paper concerning the net neutrality debate worldwide. It analyses the different positions amongst the stakeholders but from the Internet principles themselves. It defends the relevance of competition against discrimination and highlights the need to protect Internet as an open space.

How do Consumers value Net Neutrality in an evolving Internet marketplace?, BEREC, May 2015.

The EU Regulator Body, BEREC, gathering all the EU national regulators, has issued a report in which it tries to show consumers attitudes towards Net Neutrality in some of the EU countries, such as Croatia, Sweden, Greece and Czech Republic, with the inclusion in a lesser scale of Germany, the UK and the USA. This gives an overview from the users perspective, which is always interesting. A key element: 60-80% were fine with Internet service providers managing traffic for the purpose of stability and 50-70% accepted the fact that some apps could be prioritized for users willing to pay for it. The survey was conducted by YouGov, Deloitte and WIK-Consult.

Definition of a Research and Innovation Policy, Leveraging Cloud Computing and IoT Combination, European Commission, May 2015.

This is a report delivered by IDC and TXT on the recommended public policies that would allow to the European industry to reach a higher presence on the “Internet of Things” and on Cloud technologies that should support it. It underlines the need to foster technological innovation, giving priority to some sectors such as energy, transport, manufacture industry and public services. It also gives an overview of Europe’s IoT digital ecosystem and proposes some public policy recommendations.

Telecom and Media, how to ride the OTT wave, Arthur D. Little, May 2015.

This report is based on more than 110 interviews with executives from the telecom, media and Internet sector, in order to better know the perspectives and evolution of the telecom and media sector, with a clear focus on audio and video, and the role of the main stakeholders in this evolving market.

 

It highlights the clear digitalization of contents and the appearance of new competitors such as Google, Amazon, Apple or Netflix, facing traditional TV & radio players. It also gives some advice on how these actors should react to these changes of the market and how each agent could take advantage of the new situation.

 

 

 

 

 

13Adult´s Media use and attitudes, OFCOM, May 2015.

The UK regulatory authority, OFCOM, draws through this 10th report the use and attitudes of UK adults (aged 16 and above) across the internet, TV, radio, games and mobile phones. The outcomes are interesting and show a clear increase in the time people spend online compared to 10 years ago. There is also a strong increase of mobile and online entertainment to watch TV and video on the Internet instead through the TV, which continues to be highly appreciated by adults, but replaced by mobile phones for the young people.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

Online Copyright Enforcement, Consumer Behaviour and Market Structure, European Commission, May 2015.

This report written by the European Commission’s Joint Research Center focuses on the online copyright defense and finds that fighting against content online piracy, the website blocking and shutdowns are ineffective remedies. This conclusion is reached after the data gathered from a set of 5.000 German Internet users, the paper finds that raids against piracy websites result in very short-lived decreases in online piracy and it creates a fragmentation of the market for piracy, making law enforcement interventions more difficult.
