Tell us a little about yourself. What does your job at Telefónica involve?

I am a radio optimiser for Castile and León. I work in the Network Engineering and Creation Department, within the Operations and Network Division.

What is radio optimisation?

It’s the work that ensures users have the best customer experience on the mobile network, both for voice calls and browsing, anytime, anywhere. We play around with the parameters that configure the base stations, which are the devices that provide coverage, to achieve this.

Why is it important?

We work on three pillars: knowledge, detection and evolution of the mobile network in each territory.

Knowledge: we are the ones in contact with the actual mobile network and we know the characteristics of each territory so that the network can adapt as best as possible and achieve the best performance.

Detection: we are aware of new needs that arise over time (new services, increased capacity, etc.) and implement them.

Evolution: we not only maintain the network, but also evolve it to make it more powerful and offer users better performance and quality of service.

What are the benefits?

The benefits are directly for the mobile network customer.

We detect areas without coverage and report them to another group so that they can begin studying the area and implement the most appropriate measures, such as a new base station or increasing the network in existing ones.

We help restore services in areas that have been affected by works or other adverse situations.

At events such as concerts or parties, we ensure that users can use the network without interruptions or congestion.

Thanks to the evolution of the network, users notice that they can watch high-quality videos, send content more quickly and work remotely from anywhere.

What professional profiles are usually involved in radio optimisation?

Telecommunications engineers.

Who would you nominate from Telefónica for this interview who you consider to be excellent at their job?

I would like to nominate a colleague who has been working at Telefónica for 26 years and who, in my opinion, meets all the requirements of an excellent employee: hard work, flexibility, responsiveness and a good attitude. Her name is María del Carmen Jiménez González.
