  • The combination of smartphones and 5G technology enables the development of numerous applications with improved performance.

Before going into detail about what a 5G smartphone is, let’s briefly define what each of these concepts means separately.

What is a smartphone?

When asked what a smartphone is and what it is used for, we could summarise it as a type of mobile phone that offers a higher degree of connectivity and performance than a conventional handset through advanced services.

These devices have a number of features, such as connectivity, that put them on a par with personal computers, thanks also to an operating system that controls the basic functions of both the device itself and the applications.

Another characteristic feature of smartphones compared to other types of mobile phones is that they increase the possibilities of communication beyond the written word, such as sound and audiovisual communication.

What is 5G?

5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology (the successor to 4G) that offers ultra-fast speeds, extremely low latency and greater capacity to connect more devices at the same time.

The advantages offered by this technology enable faster response times and a better experience in applications where real-time communication is essential.

However, 5G requires a higher deployment cost due to issues such as the need for base stations and device compatibility.

What are the characteristics of a 5G smartphone?

Now that we have a clearer understanding of these two concepts, we can deduce that a 5G smartphone is nothing more and nothing less than a combination of both: a device that takes advantage of fifth-generation networks to offer an exponentially faster mobile experience.

This is an evolution in telephony that would have been unthinkable for Antonio Meucci, officially recognised posthumously in 2002 as the legitimate inventor of the telephone (although he called it a ‘telethrone’) in the mid-19th century.

But returning to the 5G smartphone, we can break down its key features in parallel with those provided by this technology.

On the one hand, these devices enjoy superior speed, being able to download films in seconds and browse at speeds much faster than those allowed by 4G.

Low latency is another feature of this technology in smartphones, understood as a minimal delay in sending and receiving data, which can be vital in real-time applications in certain cases.

Likewise, 5G smartphones have a greater capacity to connect large numbers of devices simultaneously without saturating the network.

What are some examples of practical applications for 5G smartphones?

As we have been discussing throughout this article, speed and low latency are the main features of 5G technology, which, when applied to compatible smartphones, allows for the following uses:

  • High-definition entertainment on platforms such as Movistar Plus + or similar can be enjoyed in 4K or 8K quality without interruptions thanks to 5G.
  • Video games and their professional counterpart, eSports, also benefit from 5G, allowing games and/or competitions to run smoothly.
  • Content creators who broadcast live also benefit from 5G technology in smartphones, as content is distributed more smoothly and without interruptions.
  • Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies also clearly benefit from 5G technology, with numerous applications in fields as varied as education and entertainment, but with a particular impact—due to the importance of immediacy without delays—in areas related to medicine and industry.

These are just a few specific examples, although it is true that any use of a 5G smartphone will be faster than devices that are not compatible with this technology.

Movistar 5G smartphones

Movistar offers 5G smartphones (in Spanish), devices that not only facilitate instant downloads and streaming of ultra-high-definition content, but also allow you to enjoy real-time digital interactions, from professional applications to immersive entertainment experiences.

These smartphones also offer connectivity that combines speed, quality and innovation, allowing each user to enjoy superior performance in all digital activities.
