Sustainability indexes

Telefónica’s economic, environmental and social performance is evaluated by numerous organisations, such as the rating agencies, which in turn provide information to the socially responsible investing entities (SRI).

Telefónica makes a strong showing in the world’s main sustainability indices: Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), FTSE4Good, Sustainalytics , Vigeo, OEKOM, Morgan Stanley’s MSCI, Goldman Sachs’s GS Sustain, among others. Likewise, we should also highlight our position in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), focussed on climate change.

  • Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) – RobecoSAM, Switzerland

    For the DJSI, “corporate sustainability is a business approach that seeks to create long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks derived from economic, environmental and social developments.”
     
     Telefónica is one of the leading telecommunications companies in the world by sustainability criteria with a rating 29 percentage points higher than the average for the sector, according to the DJSI. In its most recent evaluation, the RobecoSAM rating agency gives us a score of 85 out of 100.
     
    In the economic dimension, Telefónica stands out particularly for its supply chain management, its risk management and its tax policy. In the environmental dimension, the company has achieved the highest score in strategy for climate change and electromagnetic fields. In the social dimension, Telefónica stands out for its contribution to citizenship, its labour practice indicators and for human rights.

  • FTSE4GOOD index – Ethical Investment Research Services (EIRIS), United Kingdom

    EIRIS analyses over 2,300 companies for the FTSE4Good ESG Ratings. For each aspect evaluated, it places the company at a risk level and gives it a score.
     
    Our company has formed part of the FTSE4GOOD index for many years now. In the most recent EIRIS analysis , we obtained an overall rating of 4.
     
    The evaluation of different areas of sustainability depends on the risk observed in them. Thus, we obtained the following scores: 5 with regard to the Environment part, 4 in Social aspects and 3.6 in Governance.
     
     

  • Sustainalytics - Holland

     

    The firm  investigates and evaluates the environmental, social and corporate governance issues (ESG) or extra- financial criteria internationally . Telefonica has achieved a score of 77 out of a total of 100 , which places it among the top five telecommunications companies in a sector sustainability , according to the assessment of Sustainalytics . The top rated aspects of  the company are ethical, freedom of association and philanthropy. 
     
     

  • Oekom – Oekom research, Germany

    The firm analyses over 100 criteria, selected specifically for each industry, about the social and environmental performance of companies..
     
    Telefónica has a rating of B- Premium in the most recent analysis by Oekom (C+ the previous year), which means that our performance is good on a scale which goes from D- (poor) to A+ (excellent). The agency also gives us a B- rating for the social and environmental aspects.

  • Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) - United Kingdom

    CDP shows 827 institutional investors with assets worth 100 billion dollars, transparency and performance of companies on climate change.
     
    For the third year in a row Telefónica is part of the CDP “A List” leading companies because of its strategy and transparent management regarding the risks and opportunities associated to climate change with a long-term vision. The company is one of the nine Telcos that appear in this global level ranking, and the only Spanish one.
     
    CDP has four levels –from D to A- to rank companies based on these four aspects: disclosure, awareness, management and leadership.
