Telefónica Group environmental policy

As a company committed to enhancing the wellbeing of the wider community, Telefónica is looking to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for the benefit of society - specifically as a driver of sustainable development. It recognises the importance of the environment for economic and social progress.

Accordingly, it strives to minimise the environmental impact of its activities, promoting best environmental management practices in all countries in which it is active, taking environmental criteria into account in network roll-out, and encouraging all employees to contribute to the achievement of these goals.

The Group is also looking to use innovation as an engine for sustainability, not just to minimise its own environmental footprint but also to enable it to offer customers services that help them to in turn reduce their energy usage and consumption of natural resources. With this two-fold objective in mind, the ICT sector is at the heart of the solution.

The Telefónica Group's environmental policy sets out the lines of action on environment and climate change issues to be applied by all companies, business units and employees forming part of the Group.

1. To ensure compliance with prevailing legislation and all other voluntary undertakings that Telefónica assumes in relation to the environment in all countries in which it operates, and, in addition, and in accordance with the precautionary principle, to adopt more restrictive internal standards and guidelines whereever insufficient enacting environmental legislation exists.

2. To implement environmental management systems that prevent and reduce the negative impacts the Group's activities and infrastructures could have on the environment, identifying best practices and extending them throughout the Group.

3. To apply ongoing improvements throughout the company by systematically and regularly assessing environmental performance using a specific index and establishing environmental targets.

4. To use natural resources sustainably, promoting the purchase of products that are sourced and produced in a more environmentally-friendly manner, minimising consumption of raw materials and waste generation, and encouraging recycling, recovery of materials and efficient waste processing.

5. To convey to service providers and the supply chain environmental procedures and requirements relating to their business activities with Telefónica and ensure compliance with the same.

6. To establish the processes necessary to guarantee communication, raise awareness and offer training in environmental matters for Group employees.

7. To each year disclose details of the company's environmental performance, including key indicators and targets achieved.

8. To contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing internal greenhouse gas emissions and developing products and services that help other sectors reduce their emissions.

9. To promote the creation of telecommunications services that contribute to the sustainable development of society.

10. To work with other organisations to identify more sustainable methods of development.
