Emissions inventory

In 2008, Telefónica's carbon footprint was 1,818 thousand tonnes of CO2. This figure was calculated using a methodology based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064, and includes Scope 1 (direct), 2 (indirect) and 3 (other indirect) emissions.

Telefónica knows the level of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are classified into three groups:

  • Direct (Scope 1) emissions: emissions directly controlled by the company
  • Indirect (Scope 2) emissions: emissions deriving from its activities but generated by other entities (electricity generators)
  • Other indirect (Scope 3) emissions: as of 2008, Telefónica also now measures emissions associated with employee business travel

Since 2007 Telefónica has been using an in-house methodology based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064, which is applied throughout the Company, to calculate its GHG emissions.

Thus, Telefónica's carbon footprint for 2008 has been calculated at 1,818 thousand tonnes of CO2.

The tables below provide a detailed breakdown of Telefónica's energy consumption and the CO2 emissions associated with this energy consumption and the fuel used in employee business travel in 2008.
