Telefónica has indicators for managing and monitoring its projects. The evolution shown by these data also help us to analyze the progress and future initiatives about corporative sustainability.

As the Independent Review Report of the 2014 Corporate Sustainability Report indicates, this information is checked picking some samples. Specifically, the last exercise indicators review was carried out based on Telefónica’s operations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico and Peru.

 

TELEFÓNICA´S IMPACT

Telefónica is one of the most important forces of progress for the countries in which operates. The firm PwC has analyzed this impact in 2015:

Contribution to employment: We contribute to employment with more than 1.2 million people. Thus, for each person hired for our staff, we generate 8.5 additional jobs in the countries in which we operate. In total, our contribution to employment represents, for example, about 1% of those employed in Spain and Peru.

Our contribution is produced jobs: directly (at the close of 2015 there were 129,890 professionals); induced (through consumption made by our employees) and indirect, which is what sums (60.2%) and comes from our large volume of purchases: more than 23,700 million euros per year for more than 12,200 suppliers about 85% awarded to local suppliers.

Impact on GDP: We contribute to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of all markets where we operate more than 53,600 million euros: 3.7 euros for every euro generated. This includes part of our overall tax contribution 11,454 million euros in 2015.

Contribution of our Network: Broadband, fixed and mobile broadband, that we have deployedwith the significant investment that it represents, according to PwC, 2.2% of GDP.


ENERGY AND CO2 INVENTORY

 

At Telefónica, we analyse our energy consumption each year and we calculate the carbon footprint globally in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the ISO 14064 Standard and the ITU-T L.1420 Recommendation: Methodology for energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions impact assessment of ICT in organisations, of ITU. Besides, we carry out an independent process to check data in order to obtain quality information.

 

SOCIAL ACTION MEASUREMENT

 

In the company, we calculate our contribution to social action with standard LBG methodology. This model allows to measure, manage, evaluate and communicate the contributions, achievements and impacts of business investment in the community, so comparable with other entities. In 2015, for the ninth consecutive year we use this methodology.
