Today we share with you a new Challenge, which is to develop “green” applications. Yes, as you read it: green or eco or energy efficiency applications, whatever you want to call them. We invite you to take part of a new wave of “green innovation” that is dispersed somewhere around.

The “Green ICT Application Challenge” is an idea of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), -the main entity of the United Nations for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), -as UNICEF is for children, ITU is for technology-. Telefónica and RIM support this initiative.

Maybe you will not receive lots of money if you win, but you will feel satisfied of working in something different that will contribute to solve a global problem: climate change. The objective of this Challenge is to develop applications to turn our activities greener and to protect the environment and the planet through a mobile phone or the web.  Do you think this is possible?

The applications can be designed for energy efficiency activities and the reduction of the famous CO2 emissions. You can focus your proposal on ideas for homes or office buildings, to improve the transport systems of your country, to identify new ways to turn on and off the lights of your house. You can establish a way to supervise or measure weather conditions on the area you live or know in real time if a hurricane is coming, or to assess the quality of one city, among others.

If you think these are good ideas, we invite you to think “green”.

The winner will receive a symbolic economic contribution of 10.000 US$. In addition he/she will receive an invitation with covered expenses to present the initiative at the Green Standards Week of ITU that will take place in the “Bella” Roma, Italy next September.  In this session all the “green” gurus of the ICT sector will meet. Finally, the winning application if developed could be presented during a side event in the climate change conferences COP17 in Durban, South Africa in December. COP is the most important climate change event worldwide, where climate experts join once a year.

The participation in this Challenge can be with applications for any web-based tool or software or game compatible with an IT equipment (computer) or mobile device. The limit for submissions is by July 15th of 2011 at 17:00 pm.

¡Thanks for your participation!
