At the end of September 2013, Telefónica UK business was officially awarded the €1.78bn (£1.5bn) contract to deliver smart meter communications services in the UK.

Telefónica signed the 15 year agreement which represents the industry’s largest M2M contract win to date.

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) selected Telefónica as the Communications Service Provider in a nationwide program (SMIP) to install over 53m smart gas and electricity meters in every home and small business by 2020.

The £11bn programme is expected to deliver a net benefit to the UK of £6.7bn through reduced energy consumption and more efficient management and deployment of energy across the country. It is estimated that a smart meter enabled industry could save 2bn tonnes of CO2 a year in 2020, according to the report “Smart 2020: enabling the low carbon economy in the information Age”.

Telefónica UK will provide the communications infrastructure to connect smart meters in the central and southern regions of Great Britain. The technology solution is primarily based on Telefónica UK’s existing cellular network complimented with mesh technology used to provide connections in hard to reach areas. Mass roll out of smart meters will commence during 2015.

The Internet of Things has the potential to transform society and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) is key. Telefónica is focused to develop innovative solutions in this area:
