For yet another year, Telefónica was one of the leading players in the Telecommunications sector, and as such was backed, as of April 1 2008, by 1,448,220 shareholders, based on the records of individuals and companies with a shareholding in the company, and based on information obtained from Iberclear (the Spanish securities registration, clearing and settlement system).
Market capitalisationOn December 31 2008, the Company's market capitalisation stood at 74.574 billion €, making it the fourth largest company in its sector worldwide (the same position that it held in 2007). Telefónica climbed up to the second position of the Eurostoxx 50. At the same time, the shares are also included in the Dow Jones Global 50 Titans index, which is made up of the 50 most important companies in the world.
Stock marketsTelefónica's shares are listed on all the main national and international stock markets, in all cases with a significant weighting. At the close of 2008, it made up 23.1% of the Ibex-35, 5.1% of the Eurostoxx 50, and 22% of the DJ Telco.

Share capitalOn July 18 2008, the company reduced its share capital by 68,500,000 €, through the cancellation of 68,500,000 treasury shares. As a result, the fully paid up and subscribed share capital of Telefónica stood at 4,704,996,485 euros, consisting of 4,704,996,485 ordinary shares, all being of the same class and series, with a nominal value of one euro each, being represented by book entries.
According to the information available in the company, there are no individuals or companies who exercise, or could exercise, control over Telefónica, whether directly or indirectly, or acting independently or jointly. At year-end 2008, La Caja de Ahorros y Pensiones de Barcelona (la Caixa) held a 5.013% interest while Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. (BBVA) held a 5.170% stake in Telefónica's share capital.
