In 2008 climate change strategy was given a bigger weighting on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (6%). The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, called for a "New Green Deal" to trigger world economic recovery. The European Union made climate change a priority concern, and set targets for 2020 involving a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 20% improvement in energy efficiency, and a 20% rise in renewable energy generation. The United States changed course and finally joined the Kyoto Protocol, setting itself the goal of reducing emissions by 80% by 2050.… These developments have made it a natural choice to devote this supplement to Telefónica's CSR Report to the environment and climate change.
