- Environmental education on mobile phone recycling on the Isle of Man
In an effort to raise awareness of how to use mobile phones responsibly and ensure discarded handsets are recycled, in June 2008 we took Telefónica Europe's employees' children to the Isle of Man for an environmental education event.
The meeting was attended by two of the Isle of Man's government ministers, who got involved with the rest of participants in helping the children to become aware of the importance of the environment and commit to taking care of it.
- Mobile phone recycling campaign for employees in Germany, in conjunction with the NGO WWF
In 2008 the Telefónica Europe environmental protection team in Germany launched a mobile phone recycling campaign. As part of the campaign, a total of 33,000 recycling envelopes were distributed among employees of Telefónica Europe (and their friends and relatives) who then sent in any mobile phones no longer in use so that they could be recycled and the materials used in their manufacture reused.
Not only did every employee who took part in the campaign contribute in this way to the respect and care of the environment, but, in addition, for each phone sent, Telefónica Europe donated 2.50 euros to the NGO WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) to help fund environmentral protection projects, including the project underway in “Mittlere Elbe”, the aim of which is to recover and preserve riparian forests and endangered specires in Germany.
- "Por el Deber del Verde Ver" campaign in Colombia
In 2008 Movistar Colombia began a campaign called
“Por el deber del Verde Ver” to encourage employees to sort waste.
The initiative - which won the Movistar Colombia prize in the July-August period - sought to bolster operational control in waste management, foster higher environmental awareness, and lend support to the environmental targets set out in the company's Environmental Management System.
When the campaign started, only 30% of domestic waste was delivered to licensed waste managers for treatment and recovery of the component materials. The main actions undertaken to implement the campaign were:
- Monitoring the EMS via regular releases (System progress, waste sorting indicators, printer cartridge recycling, savings in paper, water and energy use, by region).
- Information on good environmental practices
- Training by means of a virtual recycling game (see images) over a+, the company's intranet training platform.
- Employee environmental awareness-raising
- Revamping of the environment website as a medium of communication on environmental concerns
The programme was allocated close to 30 milion Colombian pesos. The budget was spent on recycle bins, waste sorting area signage and marking, and the content and implementation of the in-company communication campaign.
The outcomes were enhanced environmental awareness among employees and a sorting rate of 72% of generated waste.
