Rollout in protected areas

Branch of an almond tree bearing white flowers

In protected areas, Telefónica applies special criteria to protect and preserve the natural habitat. Through specially designed practices, the Company strives to blend the installation into its surroundings so that it becomes another part of the landscape.

In protected natural spaces and areas of special interest for their landscape heritage we implement special deployment practices to preserve the visual environment and prevent our facilities from harming the native wildlife and flora.

Our goal is to blend the facility unobtrusively into its setting using a range of techniques, materials and structures.

In 2008, for instance, we applied special practices when Telefónica Ecuador installed a facility on San Cristóbal, one of the Galapagos Islands.

The new base station and all its components blend into the unique landscape in the guise of a palm tree.

Further details on the project can be found in the CSR Atlas.

Installing network infrastructure in protected areas is not always viable, however. Whatever the circumstances, and always in compliance with applicable regulations, Telefónica applies special criteria to these spaces and lays stress on caring for and preserving the natural setting.
