RESOURCE USE

Telefónica can enhance its efficiency by optimizing its use of resources and input materials, by reducing waste, and by subjecting waste to suitable treatment. Our in-house awareness campaigns play a key role in helping us all to cut back on our use of resources.

Telefónica has a range of measures in place to improve efficiency and minimize unnecessary use of input materials. Telefónica strives for sustainable resource use so as to help preserve the environment and make sure that natural resources are still available to future generations.

One key initiative is to conduct awareness and involvement actions aimed at employees, inviting them to get involved in new ways to save resources and to make a closer commitment to the environment.
As regards paper use, the company consumed 16,300 tonnes of white paper in 2008, but our policy of cutting back on this paper type is increasingly widespread and far-reaching: in the same year, we used 12,800 tonnes of recycled paper.

Our philosophy is in any case to use the least possible quantity of paper - whether white or recycled - and this thinking is embodied in our "paperless office" approach in Spain and Argentina, which is growig in importance in other Telefónica Group companies.

In line with its environmental commitment, the company is also encouraging its customers to ask for their bills in electronic form. About 78 million users had opted for e-billing by the end of last year.

Further details of e-bill use are provided in the "Customers" section; just follow the link on the menu to the left of this text.

Water, a scarce resource, is not a major input to Telefónica's business. The company's actions regarding water use mainly seek to encourage good practice. In 2008, the company consumed about 4,900 million litres of water, about 17% less than last year.

As to energy use, Telefónica is committed to improving internal energy efficiency and fostering the use of renewable energy. This is one of the main challenges to be addressed by our Climate Change Office for the coming years.
