Environment in figures

Environmental accounting is a key element in the company's processes and operations and has been incorporated into the new global Environmental Management System applied throughout the Group to enable Telefónica to keep track of the investment and expenditure associated with its environmental activities in each financial year.

This section gives details of environmental and climate change data for the Telefónica Group broken down into the following categories:

Expand Emissions inventory
In 2008, Telefónica 's carbon footprint was 1,818 thousand tonnes of CO2. This figure was calculated using a methodology based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064, and includes Scope 1 (direct), 2 (indirect) and 3 (other indirect) emissions.

Telefónica assesses and monitors the various environmental factors associated with network roll-out, including visual impact and noise and radio-electric emissions, from the time the facility is planned until it is dismantled, taking environmental parameters as well as strictly technical ones into account in these processes.

Optimised consumption of resources and raw materials, coupled with the reduction and correct processing of waste, is allowing Telefónica to increase its efficiency. Internal awareness-raising campaigns have a key role in ensuring that all of us work to reduce resource consumption.

The main forms of waste generated by Telefónica are waste electrical and electronic equipment (2,500 tonnes in 2008), infrastructure waste (37,000 tonnes) and waste batteries, also deriving from network installations (1,500 tonnes).
