Responsibility of ICTs

Telefónica is looking to position itself in the debate over climate change and telecommunications by actively participating in forums designed to convey the message that the ICT industry can benefit other sectors by helping them reduce their carbon footprint.

Accordingly, the Climate Change Office's programme includes a Community action plan, headed up by the Reputation, Corporate Identity and Environment Department, that has been given as its key remit the task of strengthening the public positioning of Telefónica and the sector as key to the fight against climate change. The main challenges faced will be brought to the fore at the forthcoming Climate Change Conference, to be held in Copenhagen in December 2009.

In addition, in the course of 2008, numerous other initiatives were organised by various associations, including the ITU(1), GESI (2) and ETNO(3).

Foremost among these were the symposiums on telecommunications and climate change held in Kyoto and London by the ITU, at which Telefónica launched its energy-efficient buildings service (Inmótica), and the publication of “Smart 2020: Enabling the low carbon economy in the information age", a reported produced by GESI and the Climate Group that highlights the potential importance of the ICT industry in reducing GHG emissions.

Also in 2008, Telefónica took an active part in the “Plant for the Planet” campaign launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), allocating 1% of the income generated from the musical careers of groups created under the Espacio Movistar umbrella.

Also, at the end of 2008, the company entered into a partnership agreement with WWF Spain under which it will work to build awareness and understanding of the importance of energy saving and the fight against climate change among customers and employees.
