Renewable enery: a sustainable solution in Chile
One of Telefónica's most successul pilot projects involving the use of renewable energy on the network was carried out last year in Chile. Renewable energy has enabled the company to provide coverage in isolated areas and also allowed it to replace generators, avoid using fossil fuels and eliminate direct emissions of greenhouse gases.
The solution consists of a hybrid generation system based on solar panels, a wind turbine and batteries with 2 KW capacity. The turbine provides almost 80% of the energy required, especially in winter, when deliveries of gas-oil are practically impossible.
In 2008, this project, which entailed investment of between € 146,300 and € 190,000, reduced CO2 emisssions by approximately three tonnes and generated 8,640 kWh of electricity.
Further details on the project can be found in the CSR Atlas.
