District C: energy efficiency at the new Telefónica headquarters

Telefónica's commitment to the environment and to rational use of resources was a foremost consideration in the design of its new corporate headquarters in Madrid known as District C.

The new HQ, located in the north of the Spanish capital, is a veritable communications city. District C represents the highest benchmark for the New Working Culture being rolled out across the Company. Its architecture and technological installations have been designed to facilitate a new way of working characterised by greater cross-functional interaction, greater mobility, flexbility, team working and management by objectives. This new workspace represents a new concept in planning and architecture that is open to the environment and conceived to facilitate interaction and inter-personnel relationships.

The canopy sheltering the complex is one of the most iconic elements of this flagship business complex, since it not only provides thermal insulation and protection from the elements but also produces solar energy. More than 16,000 solar panels have been installed for this purpose, making the complex the largest indoor solar energy farm in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

The solar panels produce approximately 3.6 GWh, a volume of electricity equivalent to 15% of current consumption at District C. Thus, CO2 emissions have been reduced by more than 1,600 tonnes a year.
