Intelligent networks at Telefónica United Kingdom
Telefónica UK has been working on the development of a base station energy management database since 2006. After excellent results were achieved at pilot base stations, in 2007 and 2008 a total of 3600 energy consumption meters were installed at base stations throughout the country. This has enabled the company to identify potential sites for the implementation of energy efficiency plans, to manage its electricity bill in a more efficient manner, and to access preferential electricity tariffs.
The direct benefits of implementing these plans in 2008 included a saving of approximately € 470,000 due to improved energy management and a saving of almost € 830,000 as a result of switching from a single to two-tier electricity tariff. The project will contine in 2009 as the Company installs further electricity smart meters.
