Guggenheim Museum

Guggenheim Museum

Since it opened in 1997, Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum's acquisition programme has focused on works from the mid-20th century to the present, complementing the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and establishing a unique identity for itself. The main thrust of these acquisitions include the purchase of masterpieces and unique examples of the work of leading post-war and contemporary artists; the commissioning of specific works for the unique internal and external spaces of the Frank Gehry building; and a particular focus on modern and contemporary Spanish and Basque artists in order to preserve this important cultural heritage and display it to the world.
